“Our numbers keep growing, and we don’t know what the ceiling is!”

Myrtle Beach is a coastal city on the eastern seaboard of the United States in the state of South Carolina that attracts an estimated 18 million tourists each year. To accommodate all of these visitors the area has nearly 500 different hotels and resorts. So, how can a property differentiate itself from all of the others in the area?

For the owners of the Crown Reef Beach Resort, the answer was simple: build the largest resort-based water park along the infamous 60-mile stretch of beach known as the Grand Strand.

A great resort on the Grand Stand

Featuring a scenic ocean-front location, the 514-room Crown Reef Beach Resort already offered guests a range of amenities, including multiple on-site dining options, 11,500 square-feet of meeting and conference space, a fitness center, and several indoor and ocean-side pools and hot tubs. But, the management team wanted to add more attractions that would appeal to the whole family.

“The Myrtle Beach area as a whole has continued to grow as a family friendly destination,” says Matt Klugman, director of sales and marketing for the resort. “We saw this as a growing trend and, in 2014, added a water park. Our ProSlide® rides have increased our occupancy rates by 17%.”

A top-ranked family destination

The hotel and resort installed a 40-foot tall tower that provides a great ocean view and access to two water slides — Explosion, a 278-foot long two-person tubing ride (ProSlide® PIPEline™) and Twister, a single-person, 302-foot long body slide (ProSlide® TWISTER™). Combine these with an 8-foot tall, 20-foot long slide for the little ones (ProSlide® KIDZ Twister™), a 575-foot oceanfront lazy river, an ice cream and candy shop, a games room and a four-storey sundeck and you have the recipe for a relaxing and appealing vacation.

Although there are many attractions in the Myrtle Beach area Klugman says that many guests prefer to stay at the resort during their entire trip, taking advantage of the nearly ‘all-inclusive’ options. “Our guests see great value because admission to the water park is included in their rate,” says Klugman. “The water park offers a great environment for families and eliminates the need to spend money elsewhere. Since 2014, our on-site dining facilities are busier than they’ve ever been.”

In fact, the availability of water slides typically results in increased overall revenue for hotels and resorts. Whether it’s because guests are eating meals next to the lazy river, making purchases in the gift shop (like water wings and fun flotation devices for the kids) or renting pool-side cabanas, water slides encourage your guests to spend more time – and more money – in your facility.

“Two years later, these investments continue to pay off,” says Klugman. “The water park allows us to offer something for everyone and has also allowed us to increase our nightly rate by an average of $30, and we haven’t seen the ceiling yet!”

The management team recognizes the resort’s vast potential and are constantly working to make it the best resort in Myrtle Beach. In 2015, the Crown Reef Beach Resort and Waterpark was named to USA Today’s 10 Best “Hotels For Water Fun In The Winter.”
