Acquapark at Etnaland Resort, Italy, is home to the only water park on the island of Sicily. It was established in 2001 and is situated amongst the beautiful surroundings outside the city of Catania and Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest volcano. Acquapark has received great acclaim from both Parksmania (Best Park of the Year 2015) and TripAdvisor® (Certificates of Excellence in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016). The Los Angeles Times also named Acquapark to its list of Top 20 Waterparks in the world in 2013.
Typically open for less than 70 days each summer (from early July to early September), the 16-hectare(40 acres) water park offers 30 different water rides and attractions. In 2015, as part of preparations for its 15th season, Acqualand’s Director, Francesco Russello, had a vision to open a new attraction – or two – that would generate excitement for its 300,000 annual visitors.
“We wanted to offer our guests something extraordinary. What ProSlide delivered is breathtakingly unique”
In July 2016, Etnaland opened two new attractions:
Colossum: A gigantic 160m (525 foot) long, 4-person tubing ride (the first ProSlide® BehemothBOWL™ 40/TornadoWAVE™ 60 in Europe) with a completely predictable path that has rafts plunge at a 100% grade onto the TornadoWAVE™60 wall and into a nail-biting zero-gravity moment as they make a wide, sweep across the wall then slide through the narrow exit, another curve and into the pool.
Super Red Cannon: Two 16m (52.5 foot) high, symmetrical flame-red looping body slides with drop launch systems (the first ProSlide® SuperLOOP™ with SkyBOX™ drop launch capsules in Italy) that drop guests into a thrilling 60m (195 foot) ride that ends with a body-drenching splash in the landing pool.
“To distinguish ourselves from other Italian water parks, we wanted to offer our guests something extraordinary,” says Francesco Russello, owner of Etnaland. “We contacted ProSlide to make it happen, and they proposed two iconic attractions that have made us a one-of-a-kind water park with unique and breathtaking water rides.”
Colossum also features a powered conveyor belt start, instead of a traditional start tub, which reduces load times and increases dispatch rates and resulting capacities. These additions were so successful, plans are already underway to add another iconic ride to the tower that currently serves Colossum!
